“HOW TO USE A LONG SLENDER GUIDE TO TOTALLY INCREASE YOUR READING RATE”.

In Tip #1, I wrote about how your eyes move whilst you are reading. And,
how they can either enhance or hinder your speed reading rate. In this post, let’s look at how beneficial it is to use a long slender guide whilst you are reading.

Guides

How many times have you heard someone say, “Don’t use your finger to read. You know how to read. That slows you down.” Using a guide dramatically increases your reading speed.

Here’s what you do…

• If you were to move your finger faster, that would have been better advice. Your eyes move more smoothly if they have something to follow. Whatever guide you use… finger, a pencil or a thin stick… just use it
• Don’t use your guide as a ruler – this way you can’t see what’s coming
• Keep your guide moving in a smooth action under the words
• The faster you move your guide, the shorter time your eyes fix on words.

Finally, T*A*N* – TAKE ACTION NOW

Apply the steps mentioned above. Then let me know how you are progressing.

Did you know that the average reading speed is between 200 – 250 words per minute? Over twenty years ago, the United Nations stated that, to keep pace with all the information we are bombarded with, you and I would need to read at 400 wpm (and that was before the advent of email, the internet and texting!)

So, with that in mind, I invite you to follow this strategy which can dramatically increase your reading rate…

Your Eyes

What normally happens while you are reading is that your eyes do the following…
• Jump from word to word and rest on each one…and/or
• Sometimes they skip backwards…and/or
• Wander off the page completely.

Here’s what you do…

• Take in groups of words at a time, even if it is only a pair… that will double your reading speed!)
• Halve the time you stop in-between each group of words
• Make every effort you can to read forwards only
• Stay on the page; focus your eyes and thoughts there.

This video shows the winner of “Ukraine’s Got Talent”, Kseniya Simonova, 24,
drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary
people were affected by the German invasion during World War II.

Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.

The images, projected onto a large screen, moved many in the audience to tears and she won the top prize of about £75,000.

She begins by creating a scene showing a couple sitting holding hands on a bench under a starry sky, but then warplanes appear and the happy scene is obliterated.

It is replaced by a woman’s face crying, but then a baby arrives and the woman smiles again. Once again war returns and Miss Simonova throws the sand into chaos from which a young woman’s face appears.
She quickly becomes an old widow, her face wrinkled and sad, before the image turns into a monument to an Unknown Soldier.

This outdoor scene becomes framed by a window as if the viewer is looking out on the monument from within a house.

In the final scene, a mother and child appear inside and a man standing outside, with his hands pressed against the glass, saying goodbye.

The Great Patriotic War, as it is called in Ukraine , resulted in one in four of the population being killed with eight to 11 million deaths out of a population of 42 million.

Kseniya Simonova says: “I find it difficult enough to create art using paper and pencils or paintbrushes, but using sand and fingers is beyond me.. The art, especially when the war is used as the subject matter, even brings some audience members to tears.. And there’s surely no bigger compliment.”

Often many of us struggle to remember a list. Yet, we are all quite capable of doing so with a large number. For example, let’s say you want to remember (or you want someone else to remember) these 18 keys to achieve success in your life and learning…

• Vision
• Commitment

For many, the PEG system is considered to be the best known of all memory systems to use.  (This strategy was first introduced to me by one of my mentors, Dr Jeannette Vos, the co-author of “Unlimited” and “Learning Revolution”)

Here’s what we do …
The 18 keys are going to be pegged to, or associated with, certain images in a prearranged order.

Let me explain…

In the following list, the word to remember is mentioned first. Then comes the [Rhyming Peg] and finally the “Mental Link”

1. Ownership [One – Bun] “Own the bun”
2. Flexibility [Two – Shoe] “Tie your shoe”
3. Choice [Three – Tree] “Choices of fruit on the tree”
4. Balance [Four – Door] “Balance the door, add hinges”
5. Play [Five – Hive] “Be a bee playing”
6. Failure = Feedback [Six – Sticks] “Break a stick”
7. Integrity [Seven – Heaven] “Two hands together – praying”
8. This is it! [Eight – Gate]  “Open the gate of heaven”
9. Support [Nine – Mine] ” Walking into a gold mine”
10. Persistence [Ten – Hen] “Pecking persistently”
11. Action [Two mallets] “2 arms banging like mallets in courtroom”
12. Win/win [Put a cut between 1 and 2] ‘Cut the world in half so each side wins”
13. Self esteem [Draw 3 into a heart] “The heart of learning is self-esteem”
14. Speak with Positive Purpose [Draw 1 and 4 into a  porpoise - like figure who are talking to each other] “Speak with good ‘porpoise’ (play on words)”
15. Focus [Create a face. Make the 1 into the eyebrow. Make the upside down 5 into the eye. Then add another eye. The eyes represent focus.]
16. Passion [The six in 16 in Swedish is pronounced ‘sex’. Sex represents 'passion'.]
17. Vision [The 7 in 17 can be shaped like a V (sideways) which also represents the birds flying south. They have a vision.]
18. Commitment [The 8 in 18 represents infinity, which in turn relates to commitment.]

Bottom Line?….Here’s What I Invite You To Do Now- (Your T*A*N* = Take Action NOW!)

1. Let’s demonstrate the first Key, OWNERSHIP. Say the rhyme (eg one – bun) Now, visualize your own type of bun. Make it one that you can see, feel, taste and hear it as you bite into it. (It could be a grasshopper bun! Make it different! It’s Your Bun! YOU OWN it!)

2. Next,  draw your bun. Make it colorful…do you remember I shared with you the power of color for your memory in an earlier post? This will help you remember the rhyme.You will also create a stronger mental association between each number and the word that rhyme with it.

3. Simple, hey!…Now repeat the process with all 18 keys.

4. Finally,  T*A*N* – use this memory system. Better than that, teach one key per week your students/ children. See how you can transfer this strategy for the learning of another list.

Were you aware that color …

• Enhances memory and is a vital factor to increase the retention of information?
• Stimulates, excites, increases brain activity as well help to relax?
• Motivates kids to learn?
• Inspires creativity?
• Keeps learners focused for a longer period of time?
• Assists ALL learners, no matter what their ages are ( child to adult)
• Keeps all learners engaged and therefore learning occurs.

Here’s what I want you to do …

If you are a parent, teacher, trainer, presenter or an adult learner, it’s crucial for us to know how to use it to our benefit. Start using colored pens, pencils and highlighters to enhance your learning and teaching. If you want more stimulation, use red, orange and yellow. To induce relaxation, use green, blue and violet.

Also consider what colors you use at home to decorate the bedrooms or areas where learning takes place. Research show that a colorful bedroom is certainly beneficial for babies.

…212°: The Extra Degree that was written by Sam Parker and Mac Anderson.

However, Here’s a warning: Once you watch this 3 minute movie, it’ll be hard to forget!

I’ve watched it numerous times but you know what…it still works. Whenever I need a little “nudge” to remind me about the difference between good and great, I’ll watch it again.

The concept is this…at 211° water is hot, but at 212° it boils and turns to steam and steam can power a locomotive. It’s that one extra degree…just one…that makes all the difference. And so many times in business and life it’s that one extra degree of effort that separates the good from the great!
